Proceed to Edgewater's fascinating Korean supermarket; Binghamton 19th century steam ferry turned into a luxury restaurant with hundreds of photos/prints/paintings of early Hudson River life; brand new ferry terminal filled with local memorabilia. Ascend steeply to historic duel site where George Hamilton/Aaron Burr battled it out in magnificent vistas of Manhattan island. Examine Stevens Tech's Hoboken campus, the birth place of American baseball. Saunter by Frank Sinatra's home. Fabulous Steak dinner at Arthur's quintessentially American eatery. 14  miles

New York's downtown BRIDGES. Cross history-laden Brooklyn Bridge from City Hall (Manhattan) to downtown Brooklyn. Return to Chinatown on Manhattan Bridge. Saunter through Little Italy to Williamsburg Bridge. Cross back to Brooklyn. Optional dinner at world famous Peter Luger's Steak House. End up at Williamsburg gallery opening(s).

Jersey City to Hoboken STEAK brunch. From the former World Trade Center, Manhattan via Path to Exchange Place, Jersey City. Walk through time-honored Paulus Hook where Lighthouse Harry captured a British fortification during the Revolutionary War. Remnants of once-proud Morris Canal which extended to Pennsylvania. Enter Liberty State Park with its impressive Railroad Museum and Technology Center. Van Vorst Park's dutch-inspired brownstone buildings (during the 1850's Jersey City was America's highest per-capita income town). Examine City Hall, Newport Mall and Jersey's Gold Coast real estate developments. Hold out to haunting Hoboken, home of Frank Sinatra and American baseball's birthplace. Inexpensive option: 24 oz. STEAK cooked to order at Arthur's American restaurant. Local property owner leads. 13 miles

ROLLER BLADE around Manhattan. Bring yours or rent. Begin at Seaport to the Battery; Hudson Park. North on West Street all the way to Inwood park. We stop at Peter Minuit's monument to his Manhattan purchase for trinkets!? South along Harlem River to Gracie Mansion, United Nations. Then underneath FDR drive to East River Park and the Seaport. Brunch at famous Jeremy's Ale House.

*Heart of the Catskills - Escarpment Trail. Start out at Haines Falls, then
scale straight up along Kaaterskill Falls to the trail. Surrounding North Lake/South Lake scale ledge to ledge ever higher to 'Onteora' (Land in the Sky as the Indians called it). Awesome views from each; finally, a stiff scramble up to North Point. Bathe North Lake if you dare on the way down.

*CANOE Pine Barrens. Gently glide suspended in Nature on the leisurely flowing, narrowly winding Batsto River. Beds of flowers, turtles sunning on logs, deer, birds and even snakes at the water's edge. Bathe in this pristine aquifer (formed in the Ice Age) as we approach the Village. A recreation of ~ 250 year ago self-contained community, it brims with History including saw and grist mills run without electricity! Here cannon
balls were forged out of iron ore gathered in the Barrens to be used in the Revolutionary War. Enjoy Ranger station's free-of-charge museum.

BICYCLE around Manhattan. Bring yours or rent at Canal Street/6th Ave. From the Seaport North to East River Park, United Nations, Gracie Mansion. Continue along Harlem River to Inwood Park at Manhattan's northern tip. South hugging the Hudson to the Park at the Battery. End up at the Seaport for seafood brunch (optional)  at Jeremy's Ale House.

*ATLANTIC CITY Educational Examination: Past, Present, Future. Hike canal traversed residential Venice Park. Visit all 13 gaming venues starting on the Bay side. Compare gambler profiles at various casinos. Assess gaming's economic impact on the City. Inexpensive all-you-can-eat brunch. Music and colorful entertainment on the famed Boardwalk. Two magnificent marinas. Optional swim in Bass River. Lead by knowledgeable former resident. Walk ~ 12 miles.

*Mashomack Preserve, SHELTER ISLAND. Via Sag Harbor + Whaling Museum (optional). Rich wildlife. Hike ~ 11 miles. Swim at secluded North East beach. 210 year old farm turned into a conference center. Learn wine making on the North Fork. Cutchogue: New York State's sunniest spot and premier center of viticulture downstate.

*KITTATINNIES - Tillman Brook/Ravine; Buttermilk Falls; Appalachian Trail. Bushwhack Tillman's very source (deer country) through the fabulous Ravine. Brook trout. Ascend Buttermilk to the AT via Hemlock Pond. Breathtaking view of the Poconos from Rattlesnake, Bird and Blue mountains. Swim glacier-formed Crater Lake.

*PELHAM BAY/CITY ISLAND, the Bronx/Westchester. Straddle City line via Fort Apache. Consider real estate tax implications of Westchester vs the City. Bridle path to Siwanoy Indian trail. Historic Bartow Pell mansion. Climb rock at Orchard Beach where we swim. Continue on to exquisite nautical City Island. Seafood feast (optional).

*Best of the GUNKS. From ledge to ledge, vista to vista with rock scrambling in between. Waterfalls, dense vegetation, caves and rivers. Bathe in Lake Awosting's ironized water; then again in Peter's brook where the water is crystal clear and cold. Oh, the Shawangunks! 15 miles

*APPALACHIAN TRAIL, Connecticut. From Cornwall Bridge North to Rt 7 crossing and beyond toward Kent. People say this is the most beautiful portion of the entire AT? Optional dinner at Kent. ~ 15 miles

*SMITH POINT fishing, clamming, beach combing. Explore this protected
seashore area and bayside. Leader provides fishing boat good for clamming as well. Then cross bridge on foot to the Ocean (~ 1/4 mile). Barbeque at Lyndale Court.

*DELAWARE WATER GAP circular/DOUBLE FOLIAGE VIEW! Ascend steeply to Mt. Tammany's Indian Point. South East view of the GAP; then descend gradually. Cross bridge to Pennsylvania to ascend Mt. Minsi on the AT. Take in North West view of the GAP - phenomenal. Please bring camera! Gingerly descend back to the bridge crossing. ~ 13 miles

*Double-barrelled attack on the HIGH PEAKS - ADIRONDACKS BEST! At 6 am Saturday group 1 sets out from famed Adirondacks Loj carrying tent(s) and supplies to Lake Mt. Colden; group 2 from the Garden (Keene Valley) along Phelps trail via Johns Brook Lodge to conquer Mt. Marcy (NY highest peak). Then 2 carefully descends the steep South East slope of Marcy to beaver infested Lake Tear of the Clouds (source of the Hudson).  2 hikes along Opalescent river's miniature Grand Canyon-like landscape to meet up with 1 at Mt Lake Colden. Swim in its frigid waters, if you dare! Overnight there in tents. Dinner prepared on open fire. Sunday morning 2 breaks camp and carries tents, supplies out to Adirondacks Loj while 1 tackles Lake Tear and Marcy in reverse of 2 the day before. An unforgettable virgin wilderness experience! Diploma for those who survive and finish.

*Peekskill-Briarcliff Trailway rails-to-trails scenic walk. Start at Croton-on-Hudson, pass by the Croton Aqueduct to Cornell Dam. Hills of northern Westchester to Blue Mountain Reservation. End up in Peekskill. ~ 13 miles. Rated B+

Saturday-Sunday December 3/4

*URBAN OUTBACK. Join the Rangers of Gateway National Park. Enjoy good old fashioned camping in our own backyard! A glowing campfire. Night prowl through the trails and runways of historic Floyd Bennett Field. Visit hangars of vintage aircraft - meet volunteer retired aviation engineers/pilots/mechanics working on planes. Fascinating. Rating B+

*FORESTS OF QUEENS. Beginning at General Slocum Memorial hike the glacial hills and valleys of Glendale, Cypress Hills and Forest Park en route to Forest Hills Gardens, an exclusive New York neighborhood.

*Mountain Top late season Trek. Climb to Dunderberg's summit passing by long forgotten tunnels from the never completed mountain railroad. Hike over several peaks with spectacular views of the Hudson Valley. Lunch on Bald Mountain. Descend into the ghost village of Doodletown.

*SLIDE MOUNTAIN (Catskills' tallest) peak . Targeted by passionate environmentalists, the area's trails are unmarked. We make our way through this virgin wildlife sanctuary to the summit of Slide, an awesome reward for the toil. ~ 16 miles.

*Woods and Lakes of STATEN ISLAND. Begin at Port Richmond to enter the Greenbelt. Pass by  Clove Lakes Park, the 'Deer Park Viaduct', Kaufman & Pouch Camps, Orbach Lake, High Rock and La Tourette Park en route to unique Golden's Deli where we dine in a vintage New York City subway car! ~ 11 miles.

*OLD BETHPAGE RESTORATION. Start at Bethpage Village through its State Park along the old Vanderbilt Motor Parkway to the Restoration. It depicts life on rural Long Island 115 years ago. Return via the Nassau County Greenbelt Trail. ~ 13 miles.

*FINAL RESTING PLACE OF THE RICH AND FAMOUS. Combined Nature walk and historic graveyards in Van Cortlandt Park, the Bronx. The 400+ acre Woodland Cemetary is the final rest for dignitaries such as F.W. Woolworth, R.H. Macy, J.C. Penney and Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia.
